How could drunk driving affect insurance premiums?

On Behalf of | Nov 20, 2020 | Criminal Defense |

The exact consequences that can stem from a conviction for a criminal charge differ depending on many details. For some, the repercussions of a conviction could reach much further than they anticipated and cause problems in unexpected areas of their lives. For example, drivers who are used to paying a certain amount for insurance coverage may be in for a rude awakening if they incur a drunk driving conviction.

When insurance providers see DUI convictions, they automatically believe that a driver will put them at risk for losses. As a result, they tend to hike premiums for drivers with a DUI record, and in New Jersey, a driver’s yearly insurance costs could increase by an average of nearly $1,200. This state has a higher increase than many other states, and it is possible for drivers to see their yearly rate increased approximately 74% after a conviction.

Unfortunately, other costs can stem from this situation as well. For instance, individuals may have to pay various fees to the court and surcharges depending on the number of DUI convictions on record. These expenses as well as significantly increased insurance rates could be financially problematic.

Luckily, a conviction for drunk driving is not automatically assumed. New Jersey drivers facing this charge do have the opportunity to create and present a criminal defense that could help them avoid a conviction. Of course, each case is different, so individuals will undoubtedly want to ensure that they have the right information that applies to their particular cases and circumstances.
